Bookmarklets are little links that you drag into the toolbar of your favorite browser to provide new functionality to your browser. Here are a few of the best ones that I have found.

Readability

Want to read the web like a kindle book. Well then get a kindle, but if you want to get a better reading experience on most websites then get readability. It’s removes the junk from webpages and provides a nice customizable look. (1) is the before and (2) is the after.

Check it out here.

Printliminator

Want to print a article on the web but don’t want the ads? You could use, previously mentioned, readibility but if you want the article pictures you need Printliminator by Chris Coyier at css-tricks. A few clicks and yo can turn any webpage into a better one. Try it for yourself.

Check it out here.

Twitlet

Update your twitter status with just a click. When you click the bookmarklet, you get a window to enter your status and click ok and your done. Very fast and easy way to update on the go.

DropBox is a great free application to sync two or more computers data. It also supports a pretty impressive iPhone client that lets you share links to your files with a few clicks. So, why change what works so well? Simple, you have one main computer and you don’t want to lose your precious stuff. Here are some tips to get the most from your free DropBox account. If you don’t have an account get one [link].

Installing DropBox

First you need to create a account at GetDropBox.com. Ok now that you’re done with that, go ahead and grab the install file for either Windows, Mac or Linux. Next, run the installer and make sure you have it load when the computer boots to ensure all your files stay backed up.

1. Mac OSX Leopard

First thing is to figure out what folders you want to keep backed up. Since the free space is 2GB you might want to limit this to just your documents folder. If you upgrade your account, then you might want to repeat these steps across more folders. I currently backup my Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folder. That is pretty much the stuff I can’t replace. To do this we need to simply create a symbolic link, which is basically just a reference to another file or directory. Creating a symbolic link and pointing it to a folder in your DropBox means that DropBox will backup whatever is in the original folder. There are several ways we can do this, but the easiest is to just open up the terminal on OSX. You can find the Terminal in “Applications/Utilities” folder.

1.1. Mac OSX Leopard – Creating a Symbolic Link

When you open the Terminal you will be shown a simple prompt $. By default your terminal session starts in your home folder and by default your DropBox folder is in your home folder as well. So let’s go ahead and get into that directory. Just type: cd Dropbox/ Now you are in your Dropbox folder. So let’s say that we want the Desktop to be always backed up with DropBox. Simple enough, so we just need to type: ln -s ~/Desktop Desktop . That’s it, now your desktop will be backed up to your DropBox. Just change desktop to documents if you want to backup your entire documents folder.

1.2. Did everything work?

So now the one file on my desktop is getting updated. Also you can click into your Dropbox folder and you will notice that a symbolic linked folder will be in there.

2. Microsoft Windows XP

With Windows it’s the same concept. The easiest way is to create a symlink is to download and install Link Shell Extension [link].

2.1. Creating the Symbolic Link – Windows

Right click on the source file that you want to create a back up of. Then select Pick Link Source. Next g oto your dropbox and click Drop As… Junction. That’s it, you’re now backing up.

So durning the Christmas holidays I went on a three week long cruise around South America. The cruise was good, but it was close to a entire month with out internet access. So before I left my good ole Charter cable modem behind I decided to download some iPhone apps for the road. I actually downloaded about 10 apps or so, however, none of them has as much time spent on them as Touchgrind. Anyway, let’s get onto the review and why I enjoyed this game.

Touchgrind

You are in control of a skateboard in a fairly large skate park. The object is to rack up as many points as possible. As you reach a certain amount of points then you are awarded new skateboards. It’s fairly simple, and I think that’s the point. Even though there are three game modes: how to, warm up, jam session, and competition, they are essentially the same.

So you goto the competition phase and the goal is to get as many points as possible in the allocated 100 seconds. That’s actually a decent amount of time, and the main thing you need to do to unlock new boards is stay in the multipliers. So that means not wiping. The controls are pretty intuitive even if you aren’t a skater… which I am not. Overall the best part about this game is that you can pick it up, play it and have a enjoyable experience for about 4 minutes at a time. Great for those restroom breaks or waiting on someone at a restaurant. Overall, this game is well worth the $4.99 price tag. You can tell there was some time spent in developing the physics and overall quality is good.

If you are in the tech world, you know that most of the traffic circulating the web goes through Cisco equipment. I read somewhere that 90% of all trafic goes through some kind of Cisco device. At the highest level of Cisco training is the CCIE or the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert. This certification is one of the hardest to get in the IT industry and students spend a lot of time and money preparing for the exam. One of the projects that I was helping with recently was to try and gauge the students current ability. This is a difficult process since the lab is very comprehensive. However, the staff here at Graded Labs came through, I think in a big way.

Graded Labs now offers, through their partnership with Internetwork Expert, a completely automated, dynamic and taliored Assessment Lab. This lab gives students the ability to see where they currently are in their training. It also provides a nice CSS/Javascript report where they can drill down and match correct assertions with their own insertions. It was a real treat to work on this project and I hope that it really helps the students enhance their studies and their confidence before they take the actual Cisco exam.

I have just finished programming a new OSX Dashboard Widget. It checks the current pricing and availability for CCIE Routing and Switching, CCIE Security, CCIE Voice and CCIE Security racks. The process for creating a widget is pretty straight forward. The only part that wasn’t support out of the box was making AJAX calls to the server to get the dynamic pricing and availability. However, just ripping the Ajax function from the jQuery library worked like a charm.

The widget is completely free.

If you want to see the widget, check out Graded Labs. Also there are some screenshots posted below. If anyone has any questions just leave a comment.

It seems the rush of free iPhone applications is slowing. Today, for example there were four applications released in the free section: Clowdy Photo Blogger, Vecka, Writing Pad, and Quitter. However, there were eight new applications for the iPhone which cost money: eWallet, Jade, Kenkou, Moo Box, Shout It, Sketches, SuperPong, and Tiny Violin. Most of these applications are just updates to previously released apps. However, it does seem developers now have a incentive to update their applications more often since, by default, when you browse all applications recently released applications are the first to show up.

So, what’s the big deal. Well, if you look at the current iTunes store there are 882 applications. Of these 882 there are 231 which are free, leaving 651 as paid applications. Thus, if things keep moving in the way they are now this means that the ratio of free-to-paid applications will rise from 35% on up. This is a good sign for the Frugle people out there.

Let’s just hope the folks at google keep this in mind when they open their app store for the android os.
