Usually, I don’t use widgets on Mac OSX. Most information I want to look up seems to be only a few keystrokes away on the web anyway. However, widgets have gotten more and more advanced and now there are even some decent games being published as a widget. One such game is Paradise Paintball. This games offers a variety of weapons and game modes including online multiplayer and it’s all free.

Watching TV shows has never been more on-demand then it is right now. New sites pop up everyday to satisfy your TV watching needs. This is my list of the top five places to watch tv shows online.

5. Boxee – This desktop application is a great source for watching TV shows. This application has a wide variety of sources which it gets videos from, and you can always add your own. Boxee doesn’t just do TV well, they also have integration with NetFlix, Pandora, and several other online services.

4. Fancast – Operated by Comcast, Fancast provides a great online video service. They offer some shows that aren’t available on Hulu or other sites. Also, if you are a comcast subscriber, then you get access to even more on-demand media.

27″ iMac Update

Just a quick update about the 27″ iMac. I received my i7 27″ iMac on Feb 3rd, and I have yet to experience any problems with the machine. WIth a Geekbench score of over 9k I’m more than delighted with this machines performance. The screen is very crisp and great for those NetFlix streams.

I did keep the box just in case the screen started acting up, but as of now, no issues to report.

What the iPad means for the industry

Instead of wasting time looking to see if Apple’s new iPad has an isight camera or comes with iChat let’s look at the bigger picture. When the iPhone was released it was locked down so that only Apple could run native applications. It slowly evolved by allowing the user to drop web app bookmarks on the home screen. As time went on Apple realized there was a greater demand for native applications than originally anticipated. This brought them to the decision to allow native 3rd party applications. It was then we saw the explosion of applications as well as sales of the device. Much like Xbox vs PS3 it’s all about the content. The device will be a dud or a winner based on the content. If developers take us from Apps to Applications (like Apple’s own iWork), then the device should be a smash. If developers stick with the App model and we are using iPhone apps on a much larger screen, the device will fail.

Zooming out even a bit further let’s take the phone industry pre-iPhone. It’s hard to remember, but think back. We were thrilled with flip phones that had terrible left-right-up-down puzzle games, and 36 pixels of Tetris on them. The iPhone not only raised the bar, but it destroyed it. Creating an almost brand new market where it wasn’t necessarily a smart phone used for business professional and on the go people. It created a enabling device that struck a chord with the world. It was a gaming machine, digital camera, and a phone. The user interface and fancy interaction drew people in, but in the end it was the apps that kept them there.

What does all of this mean for the iPad. I see the iPad as a revolutionary device, not for the fancy user interface, or the nifty interactions. No, it’s revolutionary for the amount of developers committed to developing for it. This is what will set the iPad apart from the netbooks and JooJoo pads alike. Certainly just like before other companies will play catch-up to Apple. Google will release their own tablet with a mix between Chrome Os and Android running a top. However, they will all not be on par with Apple’s offering simply due to the overwhelming number of Applications and Developers already writing software for the iPad. Computers will become the niche and devices like the iPad will become everyday computers.

gmailto for Os X

Having trouble using gmail as your main client on OS X due to lack of support for the mailto: protocol? In case you are not sure what the mailto protocol is, it’s simply a tag used in HTML that tells your default mail client to open, compose a new message and inserts the email address to. gmailto is a new application that intercepts these requests and uses gmail as the default mail client.

Beta Distraction Free Writing with Ommwriter Mac Os X

Have you been looking for a clean way to write without distractions? There are many applications available, most notably WriteRoom, which provides you with a terminal style full screen word processor. Recently released in closed beta, although available for anyone to download, is OmmWriter. OmmWriter is a unique take on this distraction free writing. It’s sleek user interface and ambient sounds provide a very good straight text writing application. This is a screenshot of the application running. It runs in fullscreen and, by default, the bottom right it has a nice snowy tree. What I really like about this application is the unique menu style that provides a interesting take on the standard menu bar. You can resize your workspace by simply dragging the edges and you can enable music, increase font size or change the font for the entire document.

This is simply for doing a brain dump of information into the word processor. This is not for formatting tables, font or a substitute for a standard wordprocessor. This is just to help you put twitter, facebook, and digg out of your view while you get some typing done.
