1. Cyberduck
Cyberduck is a free open source FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, and Amazon S3 client for Mac OS X. It has a very estensive list of features that make it the top choice for free file transfer. They include a host of protocols, document browser, quick look, bookmarking, SSH, remote archiving, Growl integration, and Apple Keychain support.
2. FUGU
Fugu, winner of the Apple Design Award in 2003 for best open souce software, offers a host of features that rvial commercial clients. These include: drag and drop, image previews, alter premissions, and Keychain support. The main bonus that FUGU offers over Cyberduck is the side-by-side interface for file transfers. It’s a great free SFTP Mac client.
3. FileZilla
FileZilla, which use to be a Windows only FTP/SFTP client is now available on all platforms. It offers multiple language support as well as transfers larger than 4GB, bookmarks, drag and drop, and remote file editing. Overall this is a great FTP client that has had years of support and contributions.
4. OneButton FTP
OneButton FTP provides a very simple FTP client for OS X. There is something to be said for an application that does one thing and does it very well. It’s very simple interface and dedication to just doing FTP right makes this a great choice.
5. Macfusion
Macfusion is quite different than the others in this list. Macfusion provides a way to mount FTP/SFTP remote computers as if they were a local drive. This is extremely handy if you are working with file editors such as NetBeans or some of the other ones listed here. This is s a great application that any developer should have handy.
When it comes to FTP or SFTP programs don’t think you need to spend $50 to get something decent. This list shows that you can get some great clients at zero of the cost. If you have any other suggestions for applications please comment below.
